Abstract Interdisciplinary studies in linguistics is a new approach which undoubtedly makes this science more practical, among which we can mention semiotics and cinema as interdisciplinary fields. Semiotics is one of the methods in text analysis. The semiotics approach deals with how language functions through production and representation. The purpose of this study is the analysis of the film as text in the framework of semiotics. For this purpose, this study generally explains the basic notions of semiotics and its position among other sciences. So it tries to describe the concepts such as sign, code, media, text and the codes involved in the medium of cinema, culture, semiosphere and also revealing the appropriate definition of the cinematic text on the basis of the Sojoodi’s stratificational semiotics and Lutman’s cultural semiotics. For this purpose, some sequences of the movie “The Past”, directed by Asghar Farhadi, have been chosen and its linguistic codes have been analyzed frame by frame. Ultimately, this research wants to show some codes such as linguistic and dressing codes convey cultural meaning more than others. However, it is noteworthy that, the method of research is descriptive-analytical.
